Life lessons from Azim Premji:
Know your strengths
While it is important to know your weaknesses, to make a mark in today’s competitive world, it is important to know and play to your strengths. If Premji hadn’t followed this principle, he wouldn’t have turned around a $ 2 million vegetable and refined oil manufacturing company into a $ 7 billion company with a presence in more than 60 countries! According to Premji, the only way to correct your weakness is by playing to your strengths!
Excellence is a journey:
No matter what you do, there will be a better and improved way to do things. You need to keep upgrading your skills to stay at the top.
Every entrepreneur can become successful. But what is important is to not let success go to your head. Or so says Premji. He has always advised young entrepreneurs to remain down to earth because the moment one lets success get into the head, he is already on his way to failure. He has also stressed the fact that failure is as much a natural phenomenon as success is. So, when you encounter failure, always learn your lessons and move on!
Stick to your values
The values and ethics of a person define his character. There is always some value stuck with the kind of business we are running. Azim Premji firmly believes that business success follows eventually but is inevitable when we stick to our ethics.
He has always quoted, “once you stand by what you believe in and don’t compromise with it under any circumstances; you become resilient to stand up to crisis”, a quality much adored by entrepreneurs!
Azim Premji has always believed that it is important to have faith in one’s ideas, even when everyone around tells you it is impossible. It is this faith that has helped him diversify Wipro and make it an IT giant, not just in the country but across the globe.
Dealing with stress
Azim Premji feels that the stress that a young person faces today while beginning his or her career is the same as the last generation faced at the time of retirement. These are times when our jobs have become more complex even though some new technology is being rolled out almost every day. It’s only natural to get stressed under such circumstances. You must develop your mechanism for dealing with stress. Some tackle it by going for a daily jog, some find relief in listening to good music, and so on. The important thing to do is to develop your stress-busting mechanism. You will need lots of energy to deal with the challenges. Unless you take care of yourself there is no way you can take care of others.
Last but not least, let us understand this through a story. There was an old man who went to the beach every day. He picked up a fish that was cast away on the shore due to a rising tide and threw it back into the sea. Every time the tide came, it brought along a lot of fish. The old man patiently picked up a fish and threw it back into the sea. After a while, a young boy approached the old man and said that the old man can’t throw away all the fish as there are so many. The old man replied that he can’t make a difference in the lives of all the fish, but he certainly can make a difference in the life of one. Our every action, however small it may be, can certainly bring a change in someone’s life.
